Who We Are
Founded
in 1930, Runels has a history of bringing the
outdoor experience to a diverse population of
girls. We take pride in the quality of our staff
and our commitment to girl planning. In addition
to choosing their programs before coming to camp,
girls at camp are offered the opportunity to plan
all camps, special events, and their daily activities.
A
day at Camp Runels, is planned by the girls. During
the day the girls participate in 2 hours of specialty
program in the morning. The rest of the day is
flexible programming designed by the girls. We
have frequent all camp programs and special camp
events during the week.
We
foster girl independence and girls sleep 6 to
a tent, yurt, or tentalo. Counselors live adjacent
to the girls. A ratio of 6 campers to 1 counselor
is typical. Counselors are responsible for the
conduct of the girls in the unit and working and
living with the girls to ensure a great session
is had by all. Counselors must be fun-loving,
patient and genuinely concerned for the welfare
and development of young people.
Camp
Runels is Not:
* A great place to party every night.
* A dorm.
* A summer vacation.
Camp
Runels is known for the maturity, quality and
the caring attitude of its counselors. We are
proud that many of our staff returns year after
year. All of our staff are selected entirely on
the basis of their ability to effectively relate
to children.
The
entire counselor staff, both new and old, attend
Pre-camp training, a week-long orientation before
the beginning of camp. Pre-camp training is a
time for staff members to get to know each other
and build the team for summer. It also gives staff
members a chance to orient themselves to the site.
There usually are sessions around camp operations,
safety and emergency procedures, program area
orientation, working with kids skills, Girl Scout
history and philosophy, and plenty of time to
learn songs, games, and outdoor skills.
A bond that binds the entire Runels staff is an
unrelenting commitment to help each girl enjoy
every day of her summer at camp, and belief.
